Tree Grate and Bench
Cast iron; cast and painted iron
Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.
The Tree Grate was designed and quality controlled by Paley, and cast by the Neenah Foundry Corporation. Each grate has four levels of ornamentation, with three breakaway rings in the center to allow for tree expansion. These were placed around trees between the US Capitol Building and the Treasury Building along Pennsylvania Avenue. A variation exists with a square edge, for positioning against a wall. The Tree Benches are a variation of the original grates, placed in the plaza areas along Pennsylvania Avenue. Benches were bolted to modified tree grates, with transitional elements to unify the two.
